RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT WORKS CARRIED OUT WITHIN THE INCUBATOR OF INNOVATION 2.0 – PHYTOREMEDIATION OF INDUSTRIAL SEWAGE

Sep 1, 2020 | INCUBATOR OF INNOVATION 2.0, News

The project “Incubator of Innovation 2.0” contributed to the financing of 9 selected R&D works. Today we present a pre-implementation work entitled “Phytoremediation of industrial wastewater”, headed by Dr. Joanna Augustynowicz, Prof. UR.

The use of living organisms in removing pollutants (bioremediation) is gaining more and more popularity in the world. Chromium compounds, in particular the form Cr (VI) belong to the so-called priority toxic compounds. The benefits of using plants are: low cost, no secondary contamination and elimination of contamination at the site of contamination.

Conventional methods for the removal of Cr from water are to reduce the Cr (VI) form to the Cr (III) form, which is less soluble, less toxic and precipitates from the contaminated solution. The resulting Cr-containing sediment (and secondary pollution – e.g. Fe salts used for reduction) is deposited in a hazardous waste landfill. This solution does not eliminate pollution, but only reduces the bioavailability of chromium in the environment.

Rzęśl not only carries out the accumulation of Cr very efficiently, but also its reduction: Cr (VI) to Cr (III) (which has been documented in cognitive studies). The proposed solution will also be aimed at recovering chromium from plant biomass for further industrial applications.

The aim of the project “Incubator of Innovation 2.0” is to support the process of managing the results of scientific research and development works, in particular with regard to their commercialization. The implementation of the program should contribute to the promotion of scientific achievements, increasing their impact on the development of innovation and strengthening cooperation between the scientific community and the economic environment.

The project called “Incubator of Innovation 2.0” is carried out as part of an out-of-competition project “Support for the management of scientific research and commercialization of R&D results in research units and enterprises” under the Intelligent Development Operational Program 2014-2020 (Measure 4.4). The total value of the Project is PLN 1,210,000.
